Why Does My Weimaraner Drink So Much Water Since Being Fixed?

After we had our Weimaraner fixed it seems like he can’t get enough water. He will drink his whole bowl full of water and then drink our other dogs water to without resting or walking away.

You don’t specify how long it has been since the neuter. Initially, when dogs come home from spay/neuter you are supposed to be told by the vet to monitor & LIMIT water consumption in the first 24 hours (to help prevent BLOAT or torsion) which can be more common after any surgery. You are also to cut their food ration to 1/3 of normal the first meal after surgery. Normally, you are to only give 1/2 cup of water every 30 minutes, until they normalize. Anesthesia (and the mouth tubes) dries a dog out. If your dog continues to drink excessively, he may Bloat – so you need to read up on that, as it can be fatal.

If it has been days or weeks since surgery, the thirst could be a symptom of another health problem. There could be infection from the surgery or… as mentioned by another poster, Diabetes or Cushings disease (are some possibilities). You don’t mention your dog’s age, nor whether the dog is on any medications. Some medications such as prednisone (or other steroids) can make a dog very thirsty. Prednisone can be given to prevent inflammation or to calm allergic reactions, or as a chemotherapy for mast cell cancer – common in Weims. You also don’t mention if you have changed your dog’s food. (Some dog foods use a great deal of salt, as a cheap flavor enhancer.) Dogs can become addicted to salty flavors, just like people (and potato or frito chips).

I suggest you contact your vet and mention the concern/issue – if the excessive water consumption continues.

hyper sensitivity to a missing feeling, he seems to be making up for what he is missing
(brain activity)[not the actual loss of the member] by filling his stomach with fluid, limit his intake and he will be fine

If thats the only thing he’s doing after getting "fixed", I would be happy :-)

If he was very recently neutered it could be an affect from the anesthesia. Excessive drinking can also be a symptom of diabetes. I would have him checked by the vet.
