We have a teacup chihuahua and want another dog. My husband is a frequent runner and both of us are gone a lot from home.
Weimaraners are great dogs, but they are not for everybody
Here is information on the breed that will help you decide whether or not this breed is right for you.

weimaraners are great dogs but they do require attention they love to be active so a runner would be great for the dog.

If both of you are gone from home a lot, a Weim is NOT!!! for you. They are known for their attachment to their owners and their extreme separation anxiety when left alone.

The Weimaraner is a silver-gray breed of dog developed originally in early 19th century for hunting. Early Weimaraners were used by royalty for hunting large game, such as boar, bears, deer, and foxes. As the popularity of large game hunting began to decline, Weimaraners were used for hunting smaller animals, like fowl, rabbits, and foxes. Rather than having a specific purpose such as pointing or flushing, the Weimaraner is an all purpose gun dog. The Weimaraner is loyal and loving to his family, an incredible hunter, and a fearless guardian of his family and territory. The name comes from the Grand Duke of Weimar, Karl August, whose court enjoyed hunting.

The weimaraners I know are high energy dogs. Frequent (2 times a day walks for 45 min) are needed. The ones I have contact with suffer from separation anxiety, not sure if that is a breed thing or not. Perhaps think of another small dog to keep your chihuahua company.

I would get a breed similar in size and temperament to your Chihuahua. Weimeraner would not be the type to get. They’re highly active, can tend to be agressive, and they require a ton of one on one attention.
Maybe try another Chihuahua or maybe a Bischon or even a pug.

My girlfriend has raised and shown Weims for years. They are a hunting dog..and that is what their brains tell them to do. It would make a great running dog…but requires alot of exercise. They can go all day at a steady jog. They are hardy dogs..most love water. They can be somewhat high strung it is the hunting instinct in them. But, they are not a dog for a crate all day. They have to have something to do..and running could be it. They make a great family dog..and love kids. They do not have to be brushed…and the hair is short..so clean up is easy on them. I would read up on the breed at AKC..and do research for yourself and the dog. I wish you the best of luck.

I just adopted a weim puppy about two months ago. She is the most AMAZING dog I have ever had. I own two other dogs who are also my babies but now that I have a weim, I don’t think I will ever adopt another breed. People say they are SO crazy and energetic…it really depends on the dog though. Mine is actually kind of a calm weim and I have met others with calmer weims as well. She does need a walk two-three times a day, but as long as she gets those, she is an angel.
I SAY GET ONE!

Well, i never had a Weimaraner, but my grandma did. she died just recently, but I loved that dog. My grandma, like you, owns 2 dogs. Libby, the weimaraner, was raised as a puppy with Hershey, my grandma’s chocolate lab. Hershey was much older then Libby and died about 7 or 8 years later. Then my grandparents got Rosie, a German short hair pointer. It took Libby a little while to get used to Rosie, but she did. About 4 or five years later, my family got Daisy, a yokiepoo. When my grandma and grandpa took the dogs with them to visit for the holidays, neither of them liked Daisy. We guess she was just too young and rambunctious for them. However, my grandma’s dogs aren’t to social because my grandma lives on land that has wide open fields so she just lets the dogs out to run around without leashes. Libby also died at the age of 12 because she got arthritis and had spasms. My advice to you would be to get a weimarainer when it is a puppy so that it can get used to your chihuahua, make sure you take it places where it can be with other dogs, and if you are looking for a pet that lives a long time, I would suggest getting a small dog and/or a mixed breed because small dogs live longer than big dogs and mixed breeds live longer than pure breeds.

I have 2 Weimeraners. They are very active and VERY affectionare and loving. I never had dogs growing up but my boyfriend did, I didn’t know what it was like but now I wouldn’t know what to do without my 2 girls. They are playful but they do have a little of separation anxiety. They are crate trained and at first they did hate it but now they are used to it. The running is great for them and they love the water. I’m gone at least 9 hrs a day and they are fine, they will bark a little until they hear the garage close and then they stop

Weimaraners are extremely intelligent dogs. Very loyal and affectionate. They can be one-person dogs and need a lot of human interaction. Don’t get a weim unless you will be home with it the major part of each day. Our Weim is a great hunting dog and yet is very protective of the wild rabbits in our yard (we told her they were nice rabbits) and when we were raising pheasants she would catch the babies as the flew out of the brooder house and hold them in her mouth until my husband held his hand out for them. After about the second summer of doing this she learned to put them back in the brooder house herself. She also gets along with our two cats – something not a lot of weims do. the two weims we’ve had are by far the smartest dogs we’ve owned. I’d get another in a New York minute.

Weimaraners are Great Dogs. Hope (my weim) is a ball of energy and loves to run. But she is rough and i don’t let her be around small dogs for the fact that she plays rough and could easily hurt a small dog by accent. Hope loves her people and would rather be around me than other dogs. I tell anyone that is think about getting a weim to take the following test. Hope does many of the things the test covers and i believe it will help you understand a little more about weims.

If i were you i would really think hard about the right dog for your family. and with you having a Teacup Chihuahua i do not think a weim is for you but take the test and see what you think. They are a blast to be around but also take a firm hand in their raising. Make sure you look up as much information about weims before buying one. (like you would with any other dog breed). Good Luck.
