I am starting back school soon and my mom has to work and nobody will be home all day until I get back from school at three. Can a Weimaraner stay locked up for that long or should I go with a different breed?
P.S. I don't have the dog yet. It will be my third dog.
If you say I should go with a different breed, what breed do you reccommend to be crate for 7 hours a day?
As a puppy we will have to crate it but as an adult it will have the run of the house. We just don't want a puppy unsupervised for that long. But the puppy might be adjusted to life at our house before I go back to school and may not even need to be crated.
I guess none of the other posters here have jobs or school that keep them away from home for more than a couple hours at a time…and I suppose they also get up to let their dogs outside at all hours of the night?
Yeah, once it is an adult it should be able to hold it that long, but not as a puppy. Since they are a fairly large breed, I think I would just confine it to a safe room or even an outdoor kennel so at least it would be able to walk around a little…Weims can be nosey and destructive, especially young ones. Make sure you have a lot of time to devote to it and obedience train it..they are very intelligent and can get into trouble since they are smart dogs. Anyway, my dogs stay crated all night and if I am not home…they are no worse for wear. However, I work at a vet so my dogs come to work with me, but they do have to be kenneled sometimes at work.

no dog should ever be put in a crate for 7 hours a day. if you're gonna get a dog you're gonna either need to let him have his run of the house or take him to doggy daycare. if you can't do either of those things then you shouldn't get a dog.
if you're on your third dog you should know this already.

You should get a small breed like a maltese or a yorkie that you can paper train, and then enclose it in one part of the house…like the kitchen…along with its litter box or wee wee pad, until you get home.
But you can't keep a dog crated/caged for 7 hours a day, every day.

can you gor seven hours without peeing or pooping ?
maybe locking him in a bathroom with a litter box and a sleepin pad and some toys would be better , at least he will have some room for moving around and a place to do his business, and some toys to keep ocupied with.

An adult should be able to hold his bladder that long.
But realistically a puppy need to go out every two hours
This is true for all breeds

I don't recommend ANY breed of dog be crated for 7 hours a day. That is cruel—maybe you should get a fish or hamster? Dogs require your time and attention and if you aren't able to give that right now, then you should wait until you can responsibly care for a dog. PLEASE DON"T keep a dog locked up all day—that is not right!

I wouldn't crate any animal for 7 hours a day. If you don't have a yard for the animal or at least a humane don't get one. It isn't fair to the dog.

No, no dogs should be locked up for so long. I mean they can be, but thats just cruel. Puppies, especially, they need to go to the bathroom, and they need lots of attention. Puppies also need food 3 times a day(recommended). Unless anyone in your family can come back at like, around 11,12,1 o'clock to let them out to do their business and to eat, i would not get a puppy, maybe an adult dog would work…

Absolutely NOT! Not a weinerammer, or any other dog. Would you like to spend seven hours in a cage with no one to comfort you? Build him a little pen with a shelter for him to go into in case of bad weather. If you can't do that, wait to get a dog until you can care for it properly.

No breed should be in a crate that long. How would it feel to you if you were in a cage 7 hours each day? I believe that makes my vote a NO.

go with a small breed such as shih tzu, yorkie, maltese as for the people who keep saying no dog shouldbe locked up 7 hours people have to work and have things they gotta do i guess they prefer to have the dog run around and get into things in the house if its going to be in a crate i suggest you get a playpen instead so your dog wont be completly locked in but has some space if you can get a large and put puppy training pads in there with food and water so he/she can relieve him or herlsef and eat and have water until you or your mom come home.day care for dogs can be pricy why spend the extra money?thats just stupid unless you are going away for the entire day.

NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! AND AGAIN NO. Locking a dog up in a box is CRUEL. Locking up a big dog that needs space, exercise and stimulation is DOUBLY, no, MULTIPLY CRUEL. I don't know how you can even think about it. If you don't have a backyard or somewhere to let it stretch its legs and avoid boredom, let the poor creature go to a family that will treat it properly. If you want a creature to shut away in a small enclosure, get a snake or some fish. Actually on second thoughts, get a stuffed toy.

Certainly not. And you have two other dogs you treat like this? Please post your name and address so you can be reported for animal cruelty.
