Do Weimaraners Make Good Family Pets?

Weimaraners make excellent family pets. They form close bonds with their families and they really do hate to be separated from them. This species of canine does follow the leader and they are very loyal to them, so they can learn who in the family is top dog. If you can train them from puppyhood, they also make fantastic watchdogs.

These dogs get easily bored, and when training them you have to make sure that you keep their attention. Some Weimaraners suffer from anxiety disorder and can be very active at times. They need to know from their leader what is expected of them, in a clear and straight to the point manner.

Sometimes, this breed will need behavior modification from a professional, and on very rare occasions medications can be required. If the puppy has been trained properly, or has been mistreated, then it will cry and wail in despair. Also, if you can socialize your dog, separation anxiety will be reduced a great deal.

Training your Weimaraner is not that difficult. Never hit the dog of course, as this breed becomes wary of anyone who does that to it, and will try and avoid the person, which of course means that you will have a hard time training it. The dog loves to please its owners, and when given praise or food, will eagerly seek to repeat the action in order to get the praise again.

These jobs are very active and need a lot of exercise. Plenty of training reinforcement and running, as well as games and play time, will keep them satisfied in the activity department. They tend to jump on people and push them because of their energetic nature. Early training will take care of this problem, especially for the elderly and children.

The Weimaraner is a hunting dog and it has a strong drive to chase prey. Any small animals such as cats or others, must be introduced to your dog when it’s a young puppy. If you don’t do this, the dog will chase and harass any small animal which enters the backyard, if it’s not a member of its own family.

This species is cautious of strangers and will often take a good long look at them, when it’s in its house or yard. After you welcome the stranger into your home, the dog will be friendly. With training from puppyhood, the Weimaraner makes a good family pet.
