How much should a Weimaraner adult eat?

You usually see this dogs really fat or fit. But my wimaraner is like really skinny. We cant feed her alot because she gobbles up whatever we give her and she gets sick and throws up. I want to know how much should she be eating daily when it comes to cups of dryfood or cans of wetfood. And is it a bad idea to give dogs dryfood in the day and wetfood at night. They dont seem to eat the dryfood because i think they are waiting for their wetfood in the evening. Should we just stick to one or the other?

I feed my male weim a cup in the morning of dry food and a cup in the evening. I would stick to one or the other but I know how stubborn these dog can be. They also make dog bowls with the things in the middle to keep them from eating really fast try a pet store. Gook Luck with your weim

Is it normal for a 12 week old weimaraner puppy to constantly bite?

I received the dog after it was 4 weeks old. 12 week old weimaraner puppy gets excited and jumps on legs and then bites. Not hard, just seems playful. She just doesn't seem to NOT do it. Is she teething, is this normal for a puppy, is this a possible behavior problem?

Part of your problem, is that the dog left her litter a month too soon. She didn't learn about bite inhibition (as she would have, playing with littermates) nor was she socialized with humans & her breeders who should have started working on discouraging biting between 4 and 8 weeks of age.

You need to work on TEACHING bite inhibition. I can provide links on this. If you don't get the biting under control & the JUMPING (both are dominance issues) you WILL have permanent problems. She really isn't teething until 16 weeks, when new teeth start coming in. She doesn't understand NOT to bite, or about biting less hard (which comes first.) HOW you interact & play with her, can help or hurt the cause. Don't play tug of war with a biting puppy, don't wrestle or play roughly, period.

To help you, I suggest you go buy Bitter Apple or Fooey in a spray at your local pet store & apply to your legs or any part of your body or clothing she is biting on. It won't stain, but tastes AWFUL to most pups & therefore will help discourage her, while you also tell her VERBALLY…"NO BITE!" at the same time she is trying to bite you. The bad taste wil help her learn not to bite you, but you also have to work on it & re-enforce the "NO BITE!" reminder, if she tries to bite other people. Collar correct & make her stop, at the time you make a verbal correction. Say it like you MEAN it! This biting behavior can get you sued, if she hurts somebody, as her jaw strength increases.

Do enroll her (with you) in puppy or beginner, obedience classes. You've got a dominant breed & this puppy may need more training than just one class, but you need to do the work, if you want her to mind and respect you. (This is part of your responsibility as an owner.) She needs the socialization with other puppies, & she needs to learn basic manners or she will become a juvenile delinquent. BTW, 90% of dogs surrendered to shelters, never got any training.

How to get my weimaraner to like water?

Those of you who are fimiliar with Weimaraners know that they are very sensitive. How do I introduce my 6 month old weimeraner to water to where he will swim and enjoy water. Right now he is afraid of it. He watches our lab swim but he won't try it.

Labs and goldens are easy swimmers, just try and keep them out of water on a hot day. Weims, not so much.

He will learn by watching your lab and will be more motivated if he learns to retrieve himself and goes after a ball or a stick in shallow water first. If he sticks by your side, you can also go in the water and play with him there.

Dog paddle or no, some dogs just take awhile to learn to swim and some never do. Just keep him in the shallows until he is used to it and gradually go deeper. Dogs can become frightened the first time they float so it helps to have you there for him to swim to.

When will my Weimaraner puppy stop growing?

And we have one problem with this wonderful dog. He eats socks. Literally eats them, and the either vomits them up, or poops them out. With three kids, it's hard to keep all socks under wraps. Any advice?
Just had a family meeting about socks, we are going to be super vigilant! Thanks for the advice!

Question 1: At about 6-8 months your pup will be "vertically" grown, and will fill out that frame at the 12 - 18 month point, depending on the dog.

Question 2: You need to be a lot more cautious about the socks. Eventually they will knot or twist, they will not be passed, and - if you're lucky - you'll spend 800 to 1000 dollars for the surgery bill to remove the intestinal blockage. If you're unlucky, you may lose your dog due to complications. Get this under control now by stopping this behavior for your dog's long term health.

What should i feed a Male Weimaraner puppy to ensure it will be healthy and strong as an adult? thanks, i take it for daily walks so it gets its exercise.

All of the foods from Wal Mart and most well known dog foods have either fillers, by-products, or artificial flavors, colors, and preservatives.

Fillers such as corn, wheat, and soy have no nutritional value to them. It is all junk.

What does it take to get a weimaraner into stud service?

I have a young male weim and am interested in using him as a stud. But the problem is that I don't know much about stud services etc. Any information would be appreciated!

Only the very best males should ever be used at stud. The only reason anyone should breed his animal is to try to improve the breed. A bitch owner can go to any of the top stud dogs in the country. So, what does your dog have to offer?

Has your male been evaluated in the show ring by qualified judges against top competition?
Has he been OFA certified clear of hip and elbow dysplasia?
Have his eyes been checked by a veterinary opthalmologist, who certified him clear of PRA and other hereditary eye defects?
Has he been tested clear of brucellosis?
Is he of the proper temperament?
If you can answer yes to all of the above questions and you are one of the lucky few to own an outstanding dog, are you ready and qualified to handle a stud dog?

How can i tell wether my weimaraner puppy will have a long nose or a short nose?

I know that Weimaraners either have a long nose or a shorter nose. How can I tell by looking at a puppy wether it will have a long or short nose?

Yeah, I've owned show quality Weims for 25 years & I don't understand your question and term, short-nosed. They aren't Pugs or Boxers & don't even have a Lab type head (other than the floppy ears). I guess I need to be enlightened too.

Here's what the AKC breed Standard for Weimaraners says…
Head
"Moderately long and aristocratic, with moderate stop and slight median line extending back over the forehead. Rather prominent occipital bone and trumpets well set back, beginning at the back of the eye sockets. Measurement from tip of nose to stop equals that from stop to occipital bone. The flews should be straight, delicate at the nostrils. Skin drawn tightly. Neck clean-cut and moderately long. Expression kind, keen and intelligent. Ears–Long and lobular, slightly folded and set high. The ear when drawn snugly alongside the jaw should end approximately 2 inches from the point of the nose. "

My Weimaraner is getting little bumps on the back of her body?

I have been noticing that there are little bumps along the spine of my dog. It is lifting her hair.

Can this be caused by the heat?? What can I do to cure them?

It is most probably a dermatitis which can be provoked by many factors (fleas-normal treatment, and yes heat and sun rays too-shelter, water splash). Does the dog also have an infection of the ear? Does it shake the head more often than usual? Do the bumps itch? The dog tries to scratch or reach with the teeth? Look into the ear or insert carefully a q-tip. If it comes out black then it is a ear infection. If so, treat the ear infection (vet) and the dermatitis will solve itself also. Could also be that the diet of the dog is too rich in proteins. Reduce the amount of meat include some vegs and even fruit. These were some of the problems we had with our dog who also had these bumps and we solved them as told above. Good luck!
